Jo-Mary is Tsuut'ina (Dene Nation) on their maternal side, and French and Scottish on their paternal side. Their ancestor's know them as "Undilo" which translates to "End of the Land". They grew up in the Rocky Mountains but currently call Edmonton home.
Jo-Mary has worked within policy from municipal to federal over a 10 year span. They have spent time learning and advocating for change in policies regarding youth-in-care, Indigenous rights, food sovereignty, and climate action.
When they're not busy with policy work or school, you can find Jo-Mary on the land with their dog!
Located in Treaty 6 in Nas?agha chu tsisgo (Edmonton). Many First Nations have taken care of the land since time memorial, including the Nehiyaw, Dene, Niitsitapi, & Nakoda. We want to honour these nations as they continue being in relationship with the land and fighting for the healing and protection of her. We also acknowledge the many nations that are newer to this area but still care for community and the land, including the Otipemisiwak and Inuit communities.
Who are you to this land? Have you found your place amongst the plants and animals? I was raised by the mountains but call this area home now. I feed my spirit by listening to the wind as it ripples through the birch and aspen trees, watching the spiders spin their webs, and remembering the traditional stories from my Tsuut'ina ancestors. Find your place.
