Goodbye and thank you

A message from Jasveen on leaving Youth Climate Lab

It is with mixed emotions that I write to you today to share some news. After more than two years of supporting Youth Climate Lab as Executive Director, I will be transitioning out in Spring 2024.

This role as the Executive Director at YCL has been a dream come true. Growing up, I often felt like I didn't belong in the climate space—a feeling that I know is not unique to many BIPOC youth out there. Throughout high school and university, I struggled against this calling, convincing myself that a career in this field was unattainable. It was difficult to imagine more, given the absence of representation and the obstacles that BIPOC youth continue to face even today. So standing here today fills me with joy, gratitude, and love. I'm proud of little Jasveen who dared to dream big and am thankful for those who supported me on this journey.

Over the past two years, I've been privileged to collaborate with a dedicated team of youth, turning innovative ideas into tangible partnerships, diverse programming, and transformative visions. Since 2017, YCL has collaborated with over 100 organizations, implemented 53+ unique programs, dedicated over 1.8 million USD to support youth-led climate action, and impacted the lives of young people in 105 countries. From investigating gaps in environmental literacy in Canada, designing youth-led policies, advancing our Sustainable Development Goals and microgrants initiatives, and developing programs that intersect wellness and climate for BIPOC youth – it has been an honour to contribute to this important work and vision. I hope that in some small and meaningful way, I have helped to create spaces for youth to thrive in, and have supported taking steps towards a more just and climate-resilient future for all.

In the process of writing this letter, a song has been stuck in my head that I'd also like to share with you today. It’s All Hands by Tim Baker, in which he sings about his gratitude for all those who have played a significant role in his life. (So friends, please press play and read the rest of this letter). And on that tune, I’d like to take a moment to also share my gratitude for all ‘the hands’ that have been part of mine and YCL’s journey so far:

●      To the incredible team at YCL, with whom I've evolved and learned, a heartfelt thank you for your care, trust, and the collective impact we've made on this remarkable journey so far.

●      To our Board of Directors, both past and present, I express my gratitude for your unwavering support and guidance. Your mentorship has played a crucial role in my growth as a leader.

●      To our Partners and Funders, a sincere thank you for believing in our vision, collaborating with us, and contributing to the realization of youth-led climate solutions.

●      To my dearest confidants, Dominique and Ana, the co-founders of YCL, your guidance has been invaluable, and our shared journey has been both inspiring and fulfilling.

●      To our Associates and the global community of youth, your inspiration fuels our passion and commitment to this important work. Thank you for keeping us engaged, driven and accountable.

I am so excited for this next chapter of Youth Climate Lab, and to see our impact continue to grow and evolve from here in the hands of new leadership (Are you interested? Click this link to learn more).

And where am I off to next? I am excited to pursue my next chapter in academia very soon! I'm eager to embrace the fresh opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, all in the climate space - so I won’t be too far away. Don't hesitate to connect with me on Linkedin and keep in touch!
